Standard Special Certificate

(IL Type 10 - Grades K-12)

NIU provides two advanced certification programs leading to a special K-12 certificate.

Library Information Specialist - This certificate/endorsement authorizes the holder to provide library and media services in grades K-12. The library information specialist preparation program is provided by the Department of Education Technology, Research and Assessment in the College of Education . Candidates may enroll as a student-at-large or in a program leading to a master's or doctorate degree in Instructional Technology. Individuals interested in becoming school library media specialists must hold a valid elementary, secondary or K-12 teaching certificate. Upon completion of the program, the candidate must pass the library information specialist content-area test, as well as the Basic Skills Test and the K-12 APT if these have not already been taken.

Reading Specialist - The "Reading Teacher" endorsement has replaced the traditional 18-semester hour endorsement for "reading." Beginning in July 2005, a Reading Teacher endorsement may be earned through completion of a state-approved Reading Teacher program or by meeting specific requirements for coursework and a practicuum. These options, which provide for a period of transition, are outlined in the State Board Administrative Rules pdf document.
